Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 5 episode 8 preview: The Last Day

With an ominous title like that, Agents of SHIELD looks to the end of its first story arc of this season. But will it be wrapped in a neat little package?

Agents of SHIELD has found its own rhythm these last few seasons. Keeping its storylines into smaller arcs rather than trying to take a full season has helped its pacing.

And it’s made the show, well, fun.

This season’s story arc in space has taken almost half of the season to resolve. Heck, it’s still going on. But with an episode title of “The Last Day,” you have to think it means one of two things:

1. Their last day in space

2. The last day of Earth as a whole, functioning planet

Honestly, it’s probably the latter, now that I really sit and think about it…

Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of ABC:

"Coulson and the team discover that the most unexpected person from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s past may hold the key to stopping Earth’s destruction."

Don’t we kind of already know that it’s the little girl who helped Fitz make it to the future? Heck, she introduced herself to May at the end of the last episode.

Regardless, all of our SHIELD friends should arrive on the Earth’s surface this episode, some worse for the wear than others. Oh, and minus Mack and Elena because they stayed behind to help out their new Inhuman friend. I would say we’ve lost them, but since Natalia Cordova-Buckley was just bumped up to a series regular, they’ll be back sooner rather than later.

The next few episodes will tell us where this season is going in its second half. Will we be stuck in the future? Or will we go back to the present to save the face of SHIELD and humanity itself?

Next: Thor’s contract is up, but will Chris Hemsworth keep making more Thor films?

Thanos has to have something to destroy come May, at the very least.
