Thor vs. Sia: 2017’s 5 best superhero soundtracks
1. “To Be Human” by Sia feat. Labrinth (Wonder Woman)
As the credits roll and curtains close, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman was played out by the best song off this year’s superhero movies soundtracks. In “To Be Human” featuring Labrinth, Sia taps into Diana’s subconscious for a soaring, smokey-voiced thesis on what it means to be human while finding your place among them in the inhumanity of war.
The Australian singer captures the weird world Wonder Woman inhabits, caught between the warrior she thought she was and the Godkiller she was destined to be. But rather than being deified as a goddess to the point of being unrelatable, her love of Steve Trevor and her heartbreak after his death makes her more human to the audience than ever. Although it is a bittersweet outro to the film, you can’t help but leave the theater even more emotionally invested in her as a character.
The fact that it doesn’t play during the film only makes it more powerful because it summarizes the heart of the film while creating a thematic bridge for Wonder Woman 2. Humanity isn’t defined by the mistakes, hunger for power, greed, and selfishness Diana witnesses in the war, but by the love that binds people together through all trials and tribulations.
