3. “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin (Thor: Ragnarok)

Thor couldn’t hammer out a better movie kick-off than this Led Zeppelin classic. “Immigrant Song” was inspired by the English hard rock band’s tour of Iceland and is laced with references to Norse mythology and Viking call-to-arms. Singer Robert Plant’s opening wail leads into some of the most over-the-top lyrics this side of Asgard, played over a furious, headbanging guitar riff. Plant sings: “The hammer of the gods / Will drive our ships to new lands / To fight the horde / Sing and cry/Valhalla, I am coming!” It’s the perfect complement to the ridiculous back and forth between Thor and Surtur. In fact, it’s so good that you’ll hear it again in the final battle on the bridge and the teaser trailers. Are we sure Robert Plant isn’t Thor’s pen name?

2. “Everybody Knows” by Sigrid (Justice League)

In the dark and dismal world introduced in Justice League, Superman is dead and demotivational playlists are made redundant by one devastating song. Because what is the point of a dozen discouraging songs cobbled together when “Everybody Knows” by Sigrid exists to dull your will to live in one sweeping listen?

Playing over the opening credits, the Leonard Cohen-cover proves to be the perfect backtrack to a world mourning the Man of Steel and reeling from the loss of the hope he embodied. Black banners hang from the world’s most famous buildings, flowers wilt by makeshift memorials, a foreclosure stands lonely on the Kent farm. Or, as the song goes, “Everybody knows the war is over, / Everybody knows the good guys lost”. As we peel back the sadness over Superman’s loss to the violence now occurring in his absence, Sigrid’s voice turns to a yell over ominous thuds.

The world never sounded bleaker and in more need of a hero — or at least five.
