19. Sisters

Watch if: You’re as invested in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s real-life friendship as I am. (So, a lot.)

What it’s about: When Maura (Poehler) and Kate Ellis’ (Fey) parents sell their childhood home, the sisters decide to throw one last epic “Ellis Island” party for their high school friends. By the way, they do this instead of cleaning out their old room, as their parents requested.

Connection to Christmas: Moderate. The Ellis parents sell the house around the holidays. This is very upsetting to the sisters, not least of all because they don’t understand how they’ll be able to celebrate Christmas at their parents’ new retirement community.

Why it makes for good holiday entertainment: Don’t we all wish Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were our sisters? Even if that’s not true — perish the thought — Sisters is an enjoyable Christmas watch because it makes going home again seem not only possible, but truly awesome. While neither Kate nor Maura would return to high school if they had the chance, they’ll return to high school-esque fun anytime. Sneaking drinks while listening to music? Sure. Throwing a party while their parents are away? Of course. Messing with their school’s resident mean girl (Maya Rudolph)? Check. Doing a choreographed dance to Snow’s “Informer”? You know it!

If nothing else, Sisters is a strong argument that hanging out in your hometown doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Actually, it can even be the best.

Plus, you can’t go wrong with a cast that includes Dianne Wiest, James Brolin, Rachel Dratch, Samantha Bee, John Leguizamo, John Cena and Kate McKinnon.
