This week on The Exorcist, Andy’s condition deteriorates as the exorcism continues. Marcus and Tomas look for help in dangerous places.

Last time on The Exorcist, we spent most of the episode trapped inside of Andy’s head as he struggled to survive both the demon and the exorcism itself.

From the looks of the promo for episode 8, he’s losing ground.

First things first, catch the promo here:

After everything that’s happened on the show so far, it was almost a relief to begin the last episode with Andy tied to the bed. …Okay, that’s kind of a weird sentence. But bear with me. We’ve seen the damage a possessed person can do to their loved ones; it was bad enough that Andy literally gutted Harper’s mother in front of all his foster kids. If the demon gets its hands on any of the children, there’ll be hell to pay. (Sorry)

But it seems that any control Marcus and Tomas had over the situation is going right out the window in “A Heaven of Hell.” In the promo, Marcus says they’re losing Andy, and Tomas warns Marcus that he’s going to make a mistake. Things are clearly not going as planned; and it seems Marcus’s solution is to drag Verity into the fray.

On the one hand, I love all of Andy’s kids and want them to stay as far from the horror of their dad being exorcised as possible. On the other hand, finding a good reason to get Verity and/or the rest of her siblings into the room with Andy is a great narrative choice. Verity has her fair share of emotional scars, and the demon inside of Andy is bound to reopen all of them. It’s going to be so painful — but with the potential for such a good payoff.

What I loved about the finale of season 1 was how Angela’s whole family were the difference in successfully completing her exorcism. I would love to see something similar happen at the end of season 2 — Andy’s kids are all brave and devoted, and they could make all the difference when it comes to pulling him back from the edge.

However, the demon has already shown its willingness to use Andy’s kids against him. And it certainly would not hesitate to kill any one of them simply out of spite. Here’s hoping that Marcus and Tomas don’t give it the chance.

From FOX’s official description, it also sounds like Mouse and Father Bennett are going to be joining the gang; maybe we’ll finally discover the secret that Mouse would kill their potential demon informant to protect. At the very least, it’s going to be great to have all the characters in a room together at last.

It’s hard to say what’s going to happen next; though an exorcism might seem like a straightforward enterprise of shouting Bible verses and flinging holy water, The Exorcist has always found exciting new ways to explore familiar narratives. And if the liberal blood splatters from the promo are any indication, “exciting” is only the beginning.
