The 91st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a Thanksgiving tradition for many families. Many people remember sitting in front of the television on Thanksgiving morning watching in fascination as the floats, bands and balloons stream down the New York City streets. This year’s holiday parade will be even more spectacular than ever.
While over 3.5 million spectators will watch in person, more than 50 million people will watch the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television. According to Susan Tercero, group vice-president of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, this year’s parade will feature “a fantastic spectacle featuring an amazing line-up of giant character balloons, floats of fantasy, the nation’s best marching bands and performance groups, a dazzling array of musical artists, all coming together to herald the arrival of the one-and-only Santa Claus.”
This year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has long-time favorites and new characters stepping down the New York streets. The 91st parade will have “17 giant character balloons; 28 legacy balloons, balloonicles, balloonheads and trycaloons; 26 floats; 1,100 cheerleaders and dancers; more than 1,000 clowns; 12 marching bands and six performance groups.” The parade does a good job of blending iconic favorites like Tom Turkey with newer characters, like Olaf. Knowing that this holiday parade is family favorite, the characters, floats and performances need to appeal to a wide range of ages.
Even though the floats and the balloons are a big draw, the annual Thanksgiving Day parade showcases some of the best and brightest music performers. Popular singers like, Andra Day & Common, perform at the iconic Herald Square. Also, the event brings Broadway shows like Dear Evan Hansen and SpongeBob Squarepants, the Musical. The combination highlights the depth and diversity of New York City Theater.
