The Flash tries to speak Russian
…Emphasis on “tries.”
On a team composed of an Amazonian princess, an Atlantean, a brooding Cyborg and a guy who dresses up as a bat, The Flash brought a welcome breath of down-to-earth, what-the-heck-is-happening comedy to a very serious lineup. With the rest of the team occupying various estates in the general vicinity of suave, watching Barry get to be an anxious, self-doubting, socially awkward dork basically made the film complete.
Also, the special effects for Flash’s power constituted the best use of CGI in the entire movie. Watching the lightning bolts crawl all over the Batcave as Barry zips around nerding out over Bruce’s gadgets was so great.
Honestly, I could pick a dozen great Flash moments from this movie, but the one that stands out most in my mind is just after Flash saves a truck of Russian civilians from the onrushing Lovecraftian morph-wave summoned by the interconnected Mother Boxes. After meeting eyes with the astounded little girl in the bed of the truck, Barry wavers awkwardly for a second — you can practically see him grasping desperately for a single Russian word he knows — before cheerfully saying “Dostoyevsky!” and rushing back to the battle.
It was the perfect weird, goofy, socially awkward moment from the team’s top competitive jogger. Honorable mention goes to the part where Barry interrupts a heated debate about The Fate of the World to mention that his blood sugar is getting low.
I love that human hummingbird.
