Mr. Robot season 3 episode 3 preview: eps3.2_legacy.so

Mr. Robot season 3 continues, as Tyrell Wellick finally resurfaces for real. But will his return be actually worth the wait?

Mr. Robot needed to clean up a lot of big questions left over from season 2. And two episodes in to season 3, it feels as though the show is trying its best to explain things to viewers a little more clearly. (Okay, maybe that’s too generous. But we definitely have more information now than we have in ages.)

Except for one key plot point. We still know next to nothing about what happened to former E-Corp employee Tyrell Wellick over the course of season 2, prior to his shooting of Elliot in the finale.

It looks as though that’s about to change. Season 3’s third episode, entitled “eps3.2_legacy.so,” promises answers on this front. At least that’s what the official synopsis seems to imply:

"im tyrell wellick. former interim CTO of E Corp. ive been gone for a while. its time for an AMA!"

While we saw Wellick for a few moments back in the season premiere, it wasn’t much. Other than that — and during a sporadic handful of scenes during season 2 — we haven’t really seen Wellick at all. Not much since the end of season 1, actually, when he and Elliot began what would turn out to be the 5/9 hack. We still don’t know what passed between them that night. Nor do we know what Wellick’s been up in the weeks since then, how he fits into Mr. Robot’s plans, or even what brought him fully on board the fsociety train in the first place. (Other than the obvious reason of the fact that his whole life had just fallen apart.)

Viewers have had months to speculate about what Wellick might be up to, so this presumed explanation we’re about to get better be good. No pressure, show.

Happily, it looks like the bulk of “eps3.2_legacy.so” may actually devote the bulk of its story to Wellick’s missing time.

Will we even see Elliot this week? We might not. It isn’t unprecedented. (Last season’s best episode featured the series’ female leads and no Elliot at all.) And after a full season of waiting for this story, we probably deserve to hear it uninterrupted.
