We all love Wonder Woman. That much was clear by the box office win alone. But does that mean she’s Oscar material? Here’s where the film could succeed.
Wonder Woman is officially going to try for the Oscars. Already we heard rumors of Best Picture and Best Director, but now it seems as if more of the cast and crew could be up at this year’s ceremony.
Maybe Hollywood just is finally taking out “consider comic book movies” pleas to heart. That or they realize the impact Wonder Woman had and is trying to appease us either way. Now, here is my prediction for what the movie will actually get.
Best Picture is a bit of a stretch. As much as fans (myself included) love it, I don’t necessarily think the Academy will deem it worthy. It’d still be wrong, but the win will probably go to Call Me By Your Name or some other darling anyway.
Patty Jenkins should get a Best Director nomination, and she should win. The movie is absolutely breathtaking, and it has everything to do with the dynamic between Jenkins’s vision as well as Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Diana.
On that note, will Gadot take home at least a nomination for Best Actress? Maybe. I don’t think the Academy will see her as an equal to a performance like Margot Robbie in I, Tonya, even though Gadot did a wonderful job, so who really knows?
My personal favorite (that no one will be shocked by) are the attempts to get Chris Pine and Robin Wright nominations in the supporting categories. Because yes, they should. Obviously I’m biased but I think that Chris Pine as Steve Trevor is arguably the best performance of the year. That cave scene alone is Oscar worthy.
Next: Are Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok set to be Marvel's best?
Overall, I think that Wonder Woman might end up with a Suicide Squad moment (which should not be a phrase that actually makes sense, but it does). But it’d be nice if at least some of the movie got the recognition from the Academy that it deserves.
