When are the 2018 Emmy Awards?
We’ve just seen this year’s crop of Emmy winners, but when will next year’s ceremony take place, and what shows will be eligible?
The 2017 Emmys have come and gone. When will next year’s ceremonies start? The Television Academy hasn’t announced anything as of this writing, but a few guesses are in order for when things will happen.
First, shows that air from roughly June of this year to May of next year are eligible; the 2016-2017 rules give the dates specifically as June 1, 2016 – May 31, 2017, and it’s unlikely that that specificity will change, because it’s an exact calendar year. There are a couple rules here that apply to Game of Thrones specifically; even though it only aired seven episodes in season 7, it won’t be moving to the limited series categories in next year’s awards, because that’s still enough episodes to qualify as a season. (The count is given specifically as “fewer than six episodes” in rule 14b in the eligibility second.) Additionally, the show has to have its season or series premiere in this time period — that’s rule 2 in the same section.
So, the 2018 Emmys will take place in … well, 2018, possibly in September once more, although it’s more likely that they’ll actually move up a little from this year’s mid-September date. It appears that NBC will once again have its turn to host, and looking at the 2014 page, that ceremony actually took place on a Monday in late August.
This year, Variety published the Television Academy’s plans for the Emmys in the middle of March, so it seems like a safe bet that we’ll have a clearer picture six months from now (presumably both in terms of what’ll likely score nominations as well as when the show will actually take place).
Next: Every winner from the 2017 Emmys
For now, though, it’s time for some shows to bask in victory, while others taste bitter defeat.
