During the 69th Annual Emmy Awards, Stephen Colbert took the stage and opened with a stunning, yet poignant monologue. But how else did he do at the Emmys?
Stephen Colbert, the host of the Late Show, flexes his hosting and comedy muscles tonight for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards show. This year, he earned the chance to become the first host to win multiple awards on the same night. More importantly, he stands before an incredible roomful of talent that brings together the likes of the Stranger Things cast, stars from HBO, and of course, some of the best actors on television.
There’s a lot of pressure to entertain the crowd and the audience at home, so how did Stephen Colbert do?
He started incredibly strong, in all honesty. Like his late-night show, he immediately went in on the political climate, global warming and racial tensions throughout the world. And yes, he knows he’s just another white guy hosting the show. And he sang, “Everything is better on TV,” like treason and Chance the Rapper.
There’s something about Stephen Colbert’s voice that always makes me feel like he really means what he’s saying. For example, within the first five minutes, he brought up the first responders of Hurricane relief. Of course, any host would do that, but there’s a specific awareness that I appreciate, even when he doesn’t make me laugh out loud. “Broadcast, the TV OG,” he says before pointing out that CBS will have two Sheldons on TV at once for the first time in history.
But just when you think we can’t hear anymore about Donald Trump, Stephen Colbert spends several minutes talking about the biggest celebrity on TV in the last year as he leads up to a huge moment: bringing Sean Spicer out on stage. The real Sean Spicer.
It was definitely a big moment for everyone who watched it live. If you haven’t seen some of the celebrity reactions, you should go look at the Twitter.
