Emmys 2017: The kids walking the red carpet are trendier than you will ever be

facebooktwitterreddit

The Emmys red carpet is an exercise in extreme closet envy for the average viewer, but these child stars are showing everyone up.

You may think you are pretty trendy. You’re fashionable, you dress well, you regularly kill it, style-wise. And perhaps you do. But then you’re sitting there, watching the Emmys red carpet live coverage and you see the cast of Stranger Things cross your screen. And goddamn if they aren’t trendier than you ever were, are or could aspire to be.

We’re sorry to be the ones to break it to you, but that’s one of the truths we’re facing tonight at the 69th Emmy Awards. So, here are all the kids of the 2017 Emmys who are more stylish than you or me.

Stylish Things

First, we have Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin who play Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas, respectively, on the beloved Netflix ode to 80s sci-fi romps involving both children, monsters and mostly irresponsible adults. The quartet is rocking a broader range of designer names than you or I could ever dream of owning in a single closet. Specifically, Prada (Wolfhard), Ted Baker (Matarazzo), Garcon Couture (McLaughlin) and Balmain (Schnapp). It must be said that McLaughlin regularly rocks brocade and otherwise interestingly patterned suit jackets and he really motivates one to embrace bold fabrics. Truly, it’s inspiring.

But we must also give a shoutout to Schnapp here, whose navy velvet Balmain suit with gold accents and those buttons is really a Look. Honestly, well done all around boys. Bonus points for being able to pronounce their designers’ name, a feat we could also not do at their age.

And then there was Millie Bobby Brown, who went Full Princess and bless her. (Ballerina is another accurate nod.) She looks amazing and youthful, and the bandana belt is an inspired touch.

Styl-ish

Miles Brown, who plays the adorable and delightful Jack on ABC’s Black-ish, arrived looking very trendy. Brown is rocking a tux with a white jacket and we challenge you to find anything so spiffy in your own closet — let alone your closet when you were 11. (Shout out to Brown matching his TV father and one of our upset picks for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Anthony Anderson.) (And also beloved This Is Us supporting actor Ron Cephas Jones, not really any relevance except he also went with the white tux jacket.)

Yara Shahidi, the Black-ish star who is headed off to helm her own spin-off Grown-ish and stretches our definition of “kid” (she’s 17) arrived in a dress that frankly, we wish we owned. So, that’s all there is to say about that.

Feud: Style and You

LOS ANGELES, CA – SEPTEMBER 17: Actor Kiernan Shipka attends the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 17, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Kiernan Shipka is really a child star no more, but 17 still counts as not-an-adult and her look is really so lovely. She and Brown were clearly on the similar wavelengths, though both of their gowns match the actresses and their ages so well. The sparkles give Shipka’s gown a youthful quality, while the cut and color underscore the Feud: Bette and Joan actress’ maturity. Most importantly, it’s trendy and gorgeous and something we wish we had in our closet but very much don’t.

Also, shout out to both Shipka and Shahidi for rocking nude tulle (?) dresses with a little bit of sparkle that work perfectly with their skin tones.

(Enjoy this look down memory lane at one of her Emmy looks back when she was gracing our screens as Sally Draper to really feel old.)

Modern Style

This isn’t the first time Jeremy Maguire, the Modern Family child star who is still actually a child, has rocked a cape, nor will it likely be the last. But really, when was the last you had the confidence to wear a cape? Not all heroes do, but maybe more adults should.

That’s all for now, but we’ll continue to update this post as more youths make us reconsider our closets and challenge us to reach greater sartorial heights.
