Game of Thrones: Will Tyrion Lannister still be Hand of the Queen?

If Game of Thrones wants to parallel things, it might not let Tyrion finish out the series as the Hand of the Queen in season 8. Let’s review his season.

Before he came back to help his grandsons on Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister served as Hand of the King to the last Targaryen to actually sit on the Iron Throne, and now his younger son is serving the daughter of that king. Talk about the generations repeating themselves.

However, Tywin quit the job during his first stint, as noted by a Wiki of Ice and Fire, and that has us wondering if Tyrion will do the same and quit serving Daenerys Targaryen as her Hand of the Queen.

Granted, Tyrion doesn’t have any children that Daenerys can elevate to her Queensguard (if she decides to have a Queensguard). That’s what prompted Tywin to stop helping Aerys. It’s hard to see David Benioff and D.B. Weiss resisting the urge to draw those parallels, however, for the final season.

We’ve already talked about Tyrion obliquely — both for Daenerys’ assessment and Jon’s. In terms of narrative, though, he certainly ends the season on a slightly higher note than he started it, if only because he has mostly made his way back into the queen’s good graces. However, she has also shown a willingness to push back against him.

If he quits, he’ll think it’s for a good reason. However, it’s hard to see him leaving completely before the Night King is defeated or if Jaime does actually join the party up north, to borrow an RPG metaphor. Would he ever step down and go take over what’s left of Casterly Rock? Perhaps.

Next: Can we see more of Brienne of Tarth in season 8, please?

Tyrion’s future is quite murky, frankly, but for not getting fired and at least seeming to get through to Cersei, we’ll give him a B-. It’s just so unclear where he goes from here that it’s hard to get a read on what Benioff and Weiss will do with him, which is why the parallel solution seems like a very possible fix.
