6. Diana statue

On Jan. 20, 2017, Kensington Palace released a statement announcing plans to build a statue in the late Princess’s honor:

"“At the request of The Duke of Cambridge & Prince Harry a statue of Diana, Princess of Wales is to be erected at Kensington Palace. The Princes have convened a committee to commission and privately raise funds for the creation of the state. The committee will advise on the selection of the sculptor and will work with History Royal Palaces on the statue’s installation in the public gardens at Kensington Palace.”"

The 6-person committee includes Diana’s sister, Sarah McCorquodale, and friend Julia Samuel. There are currently four memorials in honor of Princess Diana, the largest being a fountain in Hyde Park. Because Diana’s sons were so young when their mother died (William was 15 and Harry was 12), they didn’t have the ability then to build anything to memorialize Diana after her death. Prince William and Prince Harry insist now is time for people to see a permanent statue of their influential mother: “Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.”
