18. Not Your Average Royal Mom

Prince William and Prince Harry shocked the world when they shared memories of their mother on HBO documentary: Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. The documentary is a very personal window into Princess Diana’s life and the amazing mother she was to her two boys. They flip through photo albums Diana created for them, and share some of their best memories of her.

Harry opened up about his mom not always following the royal rules:

"“All I can hear is her laugh in my head, and that sort of crazy laugh of where there was just pure happiness shown on her face. One of her mottos to me was, you know, ‘You can be as naughty as you want, just don’t get caught.’ “"

Diana also loved a good practical joke. She organized for three super models, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington to be waiting for a teenage William when he got home from school one day. Although wildly embarrassed, Prince William remembers the afternoon fondly. “That was a very funny memory that’s lived with me forever about her, loving and embarrassing and being sort of the joker,” he said.

Diana’s brother, Lord Charles Spencer, explained to BBC last month that Diana’s legacy was powerful because “she has left behind this image of what royalty can be and what it needn’t be.”
