Scrooge McDuck’s money pit and 9 other on-screen home amenities we still want
Clarissa’s pet alligator
Now this amenity isn’t technically something built into the house, but the fact that Clarissa Darling had an actual baby pool in her bedroom that was home to her pet alligator definitely lands Clarissa’s room into the “implausible dream rooms” category. Elvis, Clarissa’s pet gator, seemed perfectly happy chilling in his little habitat, and as far as we know, there was no issue with Clarissa having him as a pet. If the show were to be rebooted today, which honestly might be likely considering Hollywood’s rebooting fever, animal rights groups would almost certainly take issue with the scenario, and we’re guessing Clarissa’s parents wouldn’t be crazy about the set-up either.
Then again, Clarissa was kind of a rebel, in her own, innocent ’90s sitcom star kind of way. She wore super funky clothes, her best male friend climbed into her bedroom window daily (scandalous), and then the whole pet alligator thing. Creators of the show, which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, actually have reportedly said they chose Elvis as Clarissa’s pet to really get across what a unique young woman she was. They’ve also said Elvis was kind of a dud on camera. (I mean, he’s an alligator in a sandbox, what do you expect?)
Much like the chick and the duck (and, to a large extent, Emma and Ben) on Friends, Elvis, to our recollection, kind of faded away without explanation as the show continued into later seasons. Did he outgrow his bedroom sandbox? Did Animal Control get an anonymous tip from Ferguson? Either way, Elvis’ brief time to shine in the Nickelodeon spotlight was memorable.
