This is Us is getting its Emmy costume nod revoked

Underdog network drama This is Us suffered a small blow to its meteoric rise Friday when the Television Academy revoked one of its 11 nominations on a technicality.

This is Us has proved itself to be a rare network powerhouse in an era of streaming dramas. The emotional NBC hit was a favorite among fans, and last month when the primetime Emmy nominations were announced it was clear the Television Academy felt the same way. The show received 11 nominations in July including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama, and Outstanding Supporting Actress Drama Series.

One category in which the show was originally nominated was Outstanding Contemporary Costumes, but as Variety reported on Friday, that nomination has now been taken back. Costume categories are apparently separated by contemporary work and period costuming. Upon further examination, it was decided that due to the show’s flashback-heavy structure, the episode for which This is Us had been nominated in the contemporary category did not actually feature enough contemporary time.

As an academy spokesman told Variety in a statement:

"“Having reviewed the ‘Moonshadow’ episode of ‘This Is Us,’ the awards committee noted that the entrant unfortunately miscalculated the proportion of scenes that were period versus contemporary. In fact, the episode is predominately period. The entry (and subsequent nomination) are thereby disqualified. The sixth-place vote-getter — now the fifth nomination — will be identified by the accountants and will be revealed when the Television Academy’s final round viewing platform opens on Monday.”"

In the grand scheme of things, this oversight likely won’t have much of an impact on This is Us‘ remaining Emmy chances or fanbase. But considering the show’s already underdog status, it’s a bummer that they are the ones being hit with this issue. It’s hard to compete when your fellow networks have the ability to tell more in-depth stories, often with bigger budgets, and the freedom to include things like sex, and violence, and rough language. But This is Us rose to the challenge.

Ten Emmy nominations for a new drama, particularly one on network television these days, is still an incredibly impressive feat of which the cast and creative team should be proud. Other nominees in the category include: Netflix’s Grace and Frankie; HBO’s Big Little Lies, Empire on Fox; and Amazon’s Transparent.
