Mr. Robot gets a season 3 trailer and premiere date

Democracy is coming to the USA in the Mr. Robot Season 3 trailer. And it looks incredibly creepy.

USA announced the premiere date for the third season of acclaimed hacker drama Mr. Robot this weekend. And it did so by dropping a super creepy and extremely exciting trailer. (That still manages to not tell us much in the end. Well done, USA. )

Set to a recitation of Leonard Cohen’s “Democracy,” the lyrics build an excellent sense of dread as the clip continues. In fact, by the time we get to “Democracy is coming to the USA” at the end, the line sounds like a threat.

We see glimpses of Elliot (Rami Malek), Mr. Robot (Christian Slater), Angela (Portia Doubleday), Darlene (Carly Chaikin), and Dominique DiPierro (Grace Gummer). And, perhaps most interestingly, there are plenty of shots of Tyrell Wellick (Martin Wallstrom), who was largely absent for much of last season, and looks as generally inscrutable as ever here. There is even a quick look at Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Canavale, who joins the cast this season.

Watch the season 3 trailer for yourselves below:

Did anybody else freak out a little at that shot of Wellick and Mr. Robot next to each other? Or at so many recognizable people ―particularly Angela ―in fsociety masks?

Fans were largely divided over Mr. Robot’s second season. It featured several convoluted stories and one particularly controversial plot twist. (As well as a lot of discussion about whether Elliot is a reliable narrator.) But this trailer is back to the dystopian feel that made season 1 so popular. So perhaps season 3 will find a better balance than the show’s previous outing.

USA released the new trailer after a complicated social media scavenger hunt, involving decoding a series of tweets that led to a hidden URL. (Mr. Robot is exhaustingly weird, sometimes. But, usually it’s worth it.) The URL not only revealed the teaser, but also the season 3 premiere date of Oct. 11.

What other secrets does the lead up to season 3 have in store for us? If the past is anything to go by, probably a lot of weirdness. But that’s part of the fun.
