Game of Thrones season 7, episode 2: Who will die?
The stage is set for confrontation ahead of Game of Thrones season 7, episode 2, and, in usual GoT fashion, just about everyone is on the chopping block. But who is most vulnerable this episode?
One of the best (and worst) things about Game of Thrones is its creators penchant for killing off our favorite characters. Ned Stark? Gone. Margaery? Gone. Rickon? Gone (but, c’mon, Rickon, running in a straight line?). In season 7’s first episode, we started things off with a massacre courtesy of Arya Stark getting her revenge on the Frey family. A whole hall of dudes went down but other than that, the episode was light on the killing. All of the characters we’re emotionally attached to stuck around. Which makes us nervous for episode 2. Things are set up for at least one shocking death. But who will it be? Now that the show has strayed from the books, it’s even harder to guess, but here are a few predictions:
Theon
What is dead may never die, but we haven’t seen a lot of Theon in the preview this week. Maybe that’s because there won’t be a lot to show. Theon’s had a rough go of it in his more recent storylines and it could be his time to say goodbye. There’s been a lot more focus on his sister and her quest for power and alliances lately so perhaps Theon will serve as a way for a foe to threaten or test Yara.
Yara
Speaking of Yara, with three Greyjoys in play, and Euron clearly being set up as the big bad’s lieutenant this season, there’s reason to believe Yara, one of our new favorites for sure, could get in her uncle’s way. And after a lot of necking between Yara and Ellaria, Ellaria might see another lover of hers die before her very eyes.
Grey Worm
Dany has a lot of captains, which means there will probably be fewer of them at the end of this season than there were sailing into it. Enter Grey Worm, always at the front of the lines. Having escaped death previously (that left the show without Barristan Selmy, poor grandpa), his time might have just come—and he isn’t in the room with Dany, Tyrion, Yara, and Ellaria in the preview trailer or the sneak peek images, from what we can see.
Jorah Mormont
Does becoming a stone man count as dying? Because Jorah is well on his way given the state of his arm (and maybe more that was hiding in his cell).
Olenna
With nothing left to live for after the destruction of her house, Olenna’s looking for (as Varys aptly put it) fire and blood. Clearly the wildcard of the season, with nothing to lose and every resource at her disposal (which we were reminded of last week with Jaime’s mention of The Reach having all the grain), she might pull a Cersei and burn it all down, ’cause why not?
Jon Snow
Okay, okay, probably not. But it’s happened before, so it’s always on the table (kind of like how he was). Jon going down to the Winterfell crypts in the trailer does make it seem like there’s a conflict of some kind brewing. And while what we see in the preview is Baelish getting choked (which is not necessarily the same scene), it could be that that was a trick to throw us off and it’s really Jon who will fall victim.
Littlefinger
Petyr Baelish has been scheming and scheming for seasons, always managing to avoid the actual blame. But, according to the trailer and images, he’s down in the crypts with Jon, in front of the statue of (Jon’s mom) Lyanna. Plus, he’s the only person in the previews we saw literally getting choked out. Our money’s on the moneylender.
