Game of Thrones: What does the new trailer tell us?

HBO released a new Game of Thrones season 7 trailer at a San Diego Comic Con panel on Friday afternoon. So, what clues does it offer as to where our favorite characters may be headed in the weeks ahead?

Warning: if you’re not caught up on Game of Thrones, spoilers ahead.

There is a point in the new trailer released at San Diego Comic Con on Friday for Game of Thrones seventh season where Littlefinger can be heard telling Sansa, “Every possible series of events is happening all at once.”

And that’s certainly what it feels like at this point in the HBO drama, and in the new trailer itself. There is *a lot* going on, and the scenes and flashes from the coming weeks (the trailer’s official title is the “Weeks Ahead” preview) suggest that level of action will not be letting up. Take a look below:

Let’s break it down:

Setting the board

Between glimpses of Dany’s fleet, the Lannister foot soldiers, and little kids (boys *and* girls, if Lady Mormont got her way, and who are we kidding? Of course, she did) in Winterfell learning how to shoot bows and arrows, the stage is poised for major conflict. As the series winds down, we seem to be reversing from what has been the pattern throughout, the world getting bigger, to a storyline that seems to be coming together, shrinking the world small enough that the various factions are finally about to clash. And knowing the show, those clashes will likely be pretty dramatic (and bloody).

Can’t trust a Targ

Up north and in King’s Landing, people are choosing sides—but people in both regions believe that Dany will repeat her family’s known atrocities. We see Cersei warning her people of how dangerous the daughter of the Mad King could be to their realm, but we all know the danger Dany really poses to Cersei is the possibility that she’ll be booted from the Iron Throne.

Of course, the trailer editors also conveniently flashed an image of Jon’s face when we’re told “A Targaryen cannot be trusted,” an ominous reminder that Jon has yet to learn of his true parentage.

Yara and Ellaria share a smooth. Jaime and Cersei reignite an old flame (something she’s gotten good at). Missandei and Grey Worm seem to explore how much of a eunuch he actually is. The show is turning up the heat romantically, as well as conflict-wise. Sadly, the hordes of fans shipping Tormund and Brienne seem to be out of luck, at least as far as this trailer suggests.

Dragon > Walker

We’re sensing a real dragon theme coming on. Obviously, dragons have been a major aspect of the show since the beginning (and even if they weren’t, they’re dragons so they feel major regardless). But between Jon wanting Dany’s dragon fire, Sam’s new discovery of a potential source of dragon glass, and the dragons themselves making an appearance during what looks like a massive naval battle, it’s becoming a definite thing. But will Sam’s sleuthing and Jon’s strategy pay off when the White Walkers coming knocking.

Fighting

Euron appears to have saved, well, somewhere from an invasion as he’s heralded in the streets. Which would suggest at least one, if not several, big battles may be on the horizon. Or perhaps he’s being celebrated for delivering the aforementioned gift he promised Cersei, whatever that may be. And the battles aren’t the only examples of violence on the way, apparently. Like we saw in the preview to this week’s episode at the end of last week’s, someone isn’t pleased with Littlefinger (what else is new?) to the point where he’s being choked. Will it be the end of Petyr Baelish?

Mel’s final line

Melisandre’s final line in the trail is a bit unclear. “I believe you have a role to play, as does another,” she tells Daenerys in an unexpected appearance. Is she saying the other she’s referring to *also* thinks Dany has a role to play? Or does the *other* also have a role to play? The obvious thought here is that the other she’s talking about is Jon, but it may not be. Now that the show has gone rogue from the books, anything could happen.
