Game of Thrones and Hamilton are two of the buzziest additions to our collective artistic zeitgeist in recent years, so we probably shouldn’t be surprised that someone has combined them. And it’s pretty impressive.
Game of Thrones kicked off its seventh season with a bloody bang Sunday night (or, perhaps more appropriately, a poisoned, gurgling bang), crushing ratings records and dominating social media. So it may have just been a matter of time before some super fan decided to take the buzzy drama and pair it with another work that’s been constantly hyped in recent years—Hamilton.
YouTube user Jason Feifer is behind the medieval musical mash-up that was posted on Sunday, and we must say, as passionate fans of GoT and anything Lin-Manuel Miranda touches, Feifer might just deserve a seat at the Iron Throne of clever pop culture video-making. The piece lays a Game of Thrones primer, focused primarily on Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, over the melody of Hamilton‘s storytelling opening number, “Alexander Hamilton.” Check out the skillful result below:
It may seem an odd coupling at first, but as the finished product shows, GoT and Hamilton actually share quite a few common themes: an ambitious but underappreciated young man of questionable parentage trying to prove himself; complicated family relationships; violent family tragedies; military strategy; a taste for revolution and justice; mad kings; passionate battles for the future of a nation/kingdom. It makes a lot of sense to combine the two shows now that we think about it.
As Nerdist points out, it’s not the first time they’ve been combined. It was actually Miranda himself who launched the #HamOfThrones hashtag on social media last year, encouraging fans to pair Hamilton lines with Game of Thrones scenes.
These kinds of fan art tributes are everywhere nowadays, and some are vastly better than others, but we’re pretty sure true fans of both Thrones and Hamilton will find a lot to like about Feifer’s work. Winter was coming and he certainly didn’t miss his shot to make the most of it (see what we did there?).
