When are the 2017 Emmys on TV?
Need to start making plans for the Emmys 2017 and don’t know when they’ll air? Worry no longer. Here’s what you need to know.
It’s a big day for television today! This year’s Emmy nominations are being released today, and that means that it’s time to complain about who was passed over, what series are completely and totally overrated, who will dominate the miniseries categories because American Crime Story didn’t release a new season in time a la last year’s The People vs. O.J. Simpson domination, and what sorts of big moments we might see at the show itself.
Unfortunately, though the nominations are already out, we won’t actually get to know who wins for quite some time. Instead, the Emmys will take place, according to the official website, on Sept. 17 this year. As per usual, they’ll air live.
So why exactly is there so much time between now and the actual ceremony? Well, it appears that one answer is to give members of the Television Academy time to actually sit down and watch everything (or at least enough of everything to feel like they can make a judgment call). This isn’t like the Oscars, where the contenders are only a few hours long apiece. Indeed, it looks like the Television Academy will actually start taking votes in August, just over a month before the ceremonies take over CBS.
The Television Academy also has a great (if slightly outdated, judging by the fact that it gives last year’s date for the awards) explainer on the process of nomination, voting, and awarding for all of the shiny statuettes.
As reported by Variety earlier this year, the awards have tapped Stephen Colbert as host. It’s not outside the realm of possibility for him to perhaps score some nominations for his version of The Late Show — after all, last year’s nominees included Jimmy Kimmel Live and fellow CBS show The Late Late Show with James Corden.

So, now you know: you’ve got just about two months to set up the perfect plan to watch this year’s Emmys!
