Game of Thrones season 7: Season premiere photo analysis

HBO released just eight photos from the opening episode of Game of Thrones season 7. Let’s take a look at them and see what information we can tease out.

Happy Wednesday, Game of Thrones fans! HBO saw fit to start giving out some Westerosi goodies a little early this week, and we’re terribly grateful.

All of these photos belong to episode 61, “Dragonstone.” We’ll also tip our hats to Winter is Coming, our sister site.

Before we get any further, here’s a reminder of the episode’s synopsis:

"“Jon (Kit Harington) organizes the defense of the North. Cersei (Lena Headey) tries to even the odds. Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) comes home.” Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Emilia Clarke.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOWho needs the Iron Throne when yours is much bigger and looks like it’s made out of rock fused together by dragon’s fire? Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Emilia Clarke, Jacob Anderson.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOCheck out the detailing on Daenerys’ shoulders. It’s very reminiscent of dragon scales, wouldn’t you say? Even the shape of that upper collar piece feels dragonesque.  Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Ben Crompton. photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOIt’s all northern from here, everyone. Check out that dude with the righteous red beard in the back and keep him in mind when you look at the below photo. Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Ellie Kendrick.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOHello, righteous red beard dude!In case it wasn’t completely obvious, we agree with WiC that it seems like Bran and Meera arriving at the Wall is a safe bet. It might cap off the episode, since there is that picture floating around of her pulling his sled through the snow that’s also from this season. Might she just hide him somewhere and run ahead to the Wall to get some assistance? Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Bella Ramsey.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOLyanna Mormont continues to be a joy. Is there anything more to say? Well, she probably gets a speech to back up Jon Snow again, as WiC suggests. Even though he’s the King in the North, he gets plenty of help from ladies like Sansa and Lyanna.Seriously, that face just screams “Sit back, King in the North. Let me do you this favor.” Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Gwendoline Christie, Daniel Portman.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOAny episode which has Brienne of Tarth teaching Podrick Payne how to be awesome like her is a good Game of Thrones episode in my book. Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOSo, is Cersei’s attempt to “even the odds” her commissioning a giant and probably expensive massive floor map of the Seven Kingdoms up to the Wall? Because that’s kind of what it looks like here, with a couple of reference maps scattered about. It would make all of her plotting that much easier, and it’s better than the table Stannis Baratheon used to have. Episode 61 (season 7, episode 1), debut 7/16/17: Lena Headey.photo: Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBOSpeaking of Cersei, here she is. That glass of wine looks awfully empty. Who’s standing off to the right there, mostly out of frame? Smart money says it’s probably Jaime (and we know he’s going to wear leather in season 7). The ladder in the background suggests that there’s more remodeling going on in this part of the Red Keep.Where exactly is Cersei getting this money?Next: The Rabbit Hole: Game of Thrones editionWhat do you see in these images?
