1.  Sutton, Jane and Kat, The Bold Type

Publication: Scarlet magazine

Backstory: Sutton (Meghann Fahy), Jane (Katie Stevens), and Kat (Aisha Dee) are an assistant, a budding staff writer, and the social media director at Scarlet magazine, respectively. Like any good Freeform series, the show centers on their lives as they navigate young adulthood, complete with professional pressure, romantic relationships, and growing up.

Journalistic talent: The approach to journalism on this show is a little precious but it also feels the most real, likely because real-life former Cosmo editor in chief Joanna Coles is the show’s executive producer. The young women deal with having to constantly be on social media; publishing boardrooms full of old, white men who might not see their vision; the vulnerability of pitching personal stories; balancing social issue coverage with fashion coverage.

Next: The Bold Type could be just the kind of bold we need

Plus, their boss, Jacqueline (Melora Hardin, of The Office and Transparent fame) seems like an actual boss at a women’s magazine. (Okay, maybe a slightly idealized one.) She’s tough and intimidating, but she also challenges her staff to be the best they can be.
