2. Andy Sachs, The Devil Wears Prada

Publication: Runway magazine

Backstory: Andy (Anne Hathaway) is a recent grad who thinks she’s better than the shallow fashion magazine world. (Spoiler alert: she isn’t). Even so, she somehow lands a job as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep at her glorious Meryl Streepiest), the intimidating editor in chief of Runway magazine.

She works her butt off, gets a chic makeover, and lets the cutthroat world of fashion get the best of her as she leaves friends and coworkers in the dust. Miranda rubs off on her.

Journalistic talent: Andy’s not technically a reporter here, but she is an aspiring writer. She earns points for showing a semi-realistic depiction of the magazine world in that she feels incredibly stressed and works around the clock. Yes, I’ve already complained about movies and TV always going with the ice queen editor trope, but in this case, it works. Largely because Meryl Streep kills every role she plays (she even earned an Oscar nomination in this one). And with the role in Meryl’s hands, things feel a little more nuanced.
