3. Kevin/Malcolm Doyle, 27 Dresses

Publication: The New York Journal society pages

Backstory: There’s a little twist to the female reporter hooking up with her story subject in this one in that it’s the dude who’s the reporter and the woman who’s being sneakily reported on. Jane (Katherine Heigl) is always a bridesmaid, never a bride. She’s also in love with her boss, who ends up falling in love with her sister. Basically, things aren’t going great for Jane. (Also, why is Jane the go-to name for sad sack female protagonists?) Kevin, who writes under the pseudonym Malcolm, covers weddings for his paper. When Kevin meets Jane and learns of her bridal party record, he starts working on a feature on her.

Journalistic talent: To be honest, Kevin/Malcolm’s journalistic ability doesn’t stand out in my memory of this rather bland movie. (Mostly what I remember is the fact that out of all 27 bridesmaids dresses, there’s not a single one that’s just a normal, forgettable bridesmaid’s dress. They’re all ridiculous.) But, unlike the other movies, his journalistic abilities don’t stand out for being terrible either. Which is a good thing, right? Of course, he does fall into the falling for his subject trap. However, you probably should have seen that coming at this point.
