10. Jenny “Fortune Cookie” Chey

Jenny “Fortune Cookie” Chey is a background character in the ensemble cast of GLOW. Bash pins her as an Asian stereotype, unconcerned with respecting her actual nationality even when she carefully corrects him to say that she is Cambodian. He barrels on and eventually she gives into the idea of stereotypes dominating all of the characters on the show, embracing Fortune Cookie entirely.

Fortune Cookie enters the ring bearing a weapon, which makes her different from all of her opponents. She has what I believe is supposed to be a samurai sword, which she swings around with abandon. She makes high-pitched “martial arts” sounds and fights in a frantic, fast-paced way that looks impressive but does not pose any real threat to her opponents.

Ellen Wong is hilarious in this role and does a lot with the minimal material given to her. She infuses Fortune Cookie with a determination that is admirable, especially in the face of two white men with no concern for her culture, and her movements are wild but completely believable.

Jenny is one of the only wrestlers on the series who openly talks about doing things for herself, i.e. straightening her hair for “self esteem”. She has so many throwaway lines that Wong delivers memorably in every one of her scenes, which is remarkable insofar as GLOW is packed to the brim with overwhelming personalities and Fortune Cookie hangs mostly in the background.
