Preacher, AMC

The premise: A small town preacher returns to his childhood home and the church his father started and is intent on turning his dodgy past into service for others. Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is the preacher in question, and is gifted (??) with a supernatural power that he doesn’t really know how to handle. He enlists old flame and childhood friend Tulip (Ruth Negga) to help him come to terms with his new powers, but she’s not as convinced it’s from God as he is. They are joined by vampire Cassidy whose hijinks provide most of the comic relief of the show.

Why you’ll love it: It’s incredibly entertaining in a “shoot ’em up” kind of way. The action is choreographed to maximize more bang for your buck, and watching these three fight the bad guys (who are sometimes good guys) is a thing of athletic beauty. The show is based on the graphic novel of the same name and stays true to the gritty roots of the drama. Created and (sometimes directed) by Seth Rogen, it maintains its humor even when the gore is so hard to watch and process. It’s a Quentin Tarantino-style take on an AMC show, and its badass vibes are enough to keep you completely enthralled. There’s also a hint of a love triangle (because of course there is) that bucks the trope at every turn. If you like your clergy with a healthy dose of whiskey, swear words, and self-recrimination, you will absolutely adore Preacher.

How to watch: You can catch up on season one on AMC.com, Hulu and AMC OnDemand. Season two is currently airing Monday nights on AMC at 9/8c.
