Chris Evans is probably still done being Captain America in the MCU

Chris Evans made more vague comments about his future as Captain America and his contract with Marvel. We’re here to speculate and expand on it!

Remember way back in the winter months (okay, the beginning of April) when Chris Evans talked about his future acting career? He’s probably done as Captain America, the press reported.

Except that two weeks later, he had to rescind his statement. It still came across as vague. He most definitely was probably going to not but also maybe continue on as Captain America.

Now, in an interview with the Telegraph, Chris Evans expands on that whole notion and his contract with Marvel. In fact, he actually extended it to stay for an extra movie:

"I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could have said after the third Avengers I was done, but they wanted to make the third and fourth Avengers films as a two-parter. They said they had so many other characters to fit in – Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Ant Man – and couldn’t get them all into one movie."

There’s also a thrown-in comment later on about his decision to do so because “it’s going to wrap everything up.”

So what does this mean for the future of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? No one knows what Phase Four will hold, or how many of our original players will remain.

The easiest explanation is that Steve Rogers’ Captain America dies during Infinity War and another player — Falcon or Bucky — takes up the Cap mantle in his wake. This is several movies later than what we all expected anyway, right? We all thought he’d meet his end in Civil War, just like in the comics.

Cap’s death makes for a nice, easy transition for one of the newer Avengers to be part of the main lineup. And we’re all expecting it anyway, why not take the easy way out? Give him a nice farewell, have him be a reason the Avengers band together and take down Thanos (a la Coulson in Avengers).
