Episodes 7 through 11: Everything Daveed Diggs does

Is Daveed Diggs the very best ever? Why yes. Yes he is. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has a history of bringing in amazing guest stars, and the decision to make Daveed Diggs a recurring character in the form of philosophy student Perry helped get us through some of the flatter segments of Kimmy’s college tenure. For one thing, that guy can rap. We all knew that, but I will still always relish an opportunity to hear him do it again, even deliberately badly. Can he rap deliberately well in season 4? Pretty please?

But what’s best and most brilliant about Perry is the way he grounds Kimmy. Everyone around her is just as whimsical as she is in one way or another, but Perry may be the most “normal” person Kimmy meets. That doesn’t mean he drags her down, though. In fact, in a move that shows the hand of the improvisers that wrote it, Perry “Yes, and”s Kimmy again and again, whether she’s on a flight of fancy about unicorns and pizza or simply seeking validation for her feelings. Though he didn’t play a role in the season finale, we hope that Diggs reprises his role in season 4 as a more permanent love interest for Kimmy.
