Netflix’s trailer for Okja shows its similar themes to Snowpiercer (and Tilda Swinton)

Although Okja might be a Netflix Original, one of Bong Joon Ho’s previous films, Snowpiercer, really seems to have informed this movie as well.

It seems fitting to start this off by saying if you haven’t seen Snowpiercer, go see Snowpiercer. It has Chris Evans in a dystopian world set on a train, and also Tilda Swinton. Anyway, it seems like director Bong Joon Ho has created something like the anti-Snowpiercer while still playing with some of the same themes. It’s taken the form of Okja.

Nothing illustrates this more than the trailer for the film.

Check it out below. (Warning: one use of uncensored, not-safe-for-work language.)

Snowpiercer is, almost exclusively, a film shot in dark colors. It contrasts well with the stark white of the world outside the train. Okja, meanwhile, has a lot of bright, also natural colors dominating its palette.

However, at the same time, the two deal with the idea of food scarcity. If you’ll recall, the residents at the back of the train in Snowpiercer eat ground up and processed insects. Those in higher classes eat carefully controlled but more normal food. In Okja, the problem seems to be similar in that there appears to be some sort of food crisis leading to the development of the title creature. As Tilda Swinton (another element the two films share, although it’s easier to recognize her in this role) explains in character, Okja tastes good, takes up fewer resources, and will feed more people.

The problem is that humans have this tendency to bond with animals. Young Mija has done the same with Okja. There’s the basic idea of the plot. On that front, Okja differs from Snowpiercer, which focused a lot on very human conflicts.

Next: A Wonder Woman sequel is already a go

On the whole, however, it feels like a sort of natural progression in term of Bong’s work in the genre. It’ll premiere on Netflix on June 28.
