20. But the JSA made her a secretary

Man, you just can’t escape sexism all the time. Even if you’re a superpowered Amazonian from a mythical Greek island, you’ve got to be on the lookout for this malarkey. Sometimes, you’ve got to even step up to Superman and Batman and tell them what’s what.

Now, to be totally fair, this particular incident predates the Justice League. Instead, long before the Justice League of America was even a glimmer in anyone’s else, there was the Justice Society of America. The lineup there was a little larger and, to our modern eyes, considerably more vintage. The JSA superheroes included Hawkman, Starman, Doctor Fate, Spectre, Atom, Doctor Midnite, Johnny Thunder, Sandman, and Wonder Woman.

Apart from Doctor Fate and Wonder Woman, quite a few of those names probably sound strange to modern comics fans. Still, it’s heartening to see Wonder Woman there, even if she is yet again the token female character on the roster. So, what kind of great adventures did she get to take part in?

Well, if you consider answering the phones to be a tough battle, then plenty. You see, the 1940s-era JSA took their sole female hero and made her their… secretary. You know, dangerous missions are no place for a lady. Besides, they needed someone to stay behind and take care of any urgent messages they might receive. What? Hire another person to be the secretary instead of making a superpowered Amazon sit behind a desk all day? You’re crazy, mister.
