25 things you didn’t know about Wonder Woman
Think you know everything about Wonder Woman? Here are 25 things you might not know about Diana, Princess of the Amazons.
Wonder Woman is going to turn 75 years old this December. For a character of such age and experience, she’s doing really well. She’s one of the few female superheroes to survive from the Golden Age of comics, having first appeared in 1942.
She first began life as Princess Diana of Themyscira, the home of the mythical and fearsome Amazons. Her mother is Queen Hippolyta, leader of the all-female Amazons on the island (which is also known as Paradise Island, by the way).
The Amazons initially refuse to have any contact with the outside world. However, when Captain Steve Trevor crashes his plane on the remote island, Diana and the other Amazons face a dilemma. Clearly, a man can’t stay on the island. So, how are they going to get him back to his civilization, and who is going to escort him?
Diana eventually wins that right – in some versions of the story, she’s fallen in love with Steve Trevor – and soon becomes embroiled in the drama of the outside world. She soon feels obliged to help people outside of Themyscira, and so takes on the mantle of Wonder Woman.
Why we love Wonder Woman
While some peripheral things about Wonder Woman have changed, she’s remained much the same at her core. Diana is strong-willed and has a nearly unshakable sense of right and justice. She’s also endowed with some serious powers, quite a few of which have been granted by the Greek gods themselves. With her distinct personality and mythical origins, Wonder Woman has proven to have real staying power.
Of course, things aren’t always perfect for Wonder Woman. Though she’s proven to be a formidable comics presence for over seven decades, it wasn’t until 2017 she finally headlined her first feature film with Wonder Woman. She’s also been the victim of some unfortunate characterization throughout her career, including periods of tokenism with the Justice League of America. Her creator, William Moulton Marston, also lent his own idiosyncrasies and contradictions to her character.
Still, there’s much to admire about Wonder Woman and the people who have worked on her story over the decades. Given that she’s been around since the beginning of superhero comics, there’s probably a lot you don’t know about her.
