Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 4 episode 21 recap: The Return

It’s Agents of SHIELD’s final episode before the season 4 finale. What happens in the real world? And what other powers does Aida have now?

With this being the penultimate episode of Agents of SHIELD, stakes are bound to be high. And with that crazy cliffhanger from last week, who knows where this week will take us?! How will the real world fare with Aida now being human?

Not-So-Short Summary

At the oil rig, Ivanov sees Ophelia teleport away, only to come over and try to kick the crap out of Coulson. It doesn’t matter that they killed the one Ivanov, because there’s a dozen more waiting in the wings.

While they barricade themselves in their room, May gets caught up on all the doings that have transpired since she went under. As in, she doesn’t know how things ended with Ghost Rider and Robbie Reyes. Coulson’s succinct explanation sounds insane, but … yeah, that’s how it happened.

Coulson and May take on several Ivanovs, but they’re just stalling so they can fire torpedoes and kill our SHIELD compatriots.

In the sky, things are very much on fire in the literal sense. Daisy and Elena go at it about bringing Mack back from the Framework. While I understand Daisy’s take, I can’t help but side with Elena — knock him over the head and push him through the portal.

They show up to save Coulson and May while Ophelia and Fitz save Mack and transport him to the jet where Simmons shoots them both. Twist! I mean — they do both deserve it, what with Ophelia stealing Fitz and killing Simmons and Fitz making her beg for her life on her knees.

They return to HQ and its smoldering remains and try to reassess their situation. Fitz and Ophelia do the same. “I’m just like Ward,” he utters, a spot-on comparison. He also claims his future with Jemma is over, but he chooses her over Ophelia anyway.

That does not fly with Ophelia. And while it’s super fun to see her come unhinged at being spurned, did it really need to be because she was told no by a love interest?

Regardless! It leads us to another power of hers: electricity!

Colonel Talbot shows up and threatens everyone because he thinks they’re robots. It doesn’t last long because Ophelia wreaks havoc on the place. She has too many Inhuman powers to name.

Don’t worry — Ivanov read the Darkhold and has a master plan to bring the Framework world into reality.

Oh, and Robbie Reyes walked back through the portal into our world because why not!

Post-Credits Stinger

Elena wakes up in the Framework! She’s tied down and looks like she’s about to be tortured.

Badass Moment of the Week

Within the first four minutes of the episode! That face decapitation of Ivanov with the SHIELD shield was pretty badass.

Best One Liner

“Did something weird happen with my robot self?” May asks.

Oh, and Elena went into the Framework to save Mack. So that’ll be fun.

Every single Fitz/Ophelia scene just reeks of creepiness. They are in two completely separate emotional states. Like Ivanov tells her, she’s like an infant, unable to process anything completely. And every comment feels so calculated. Is it just her innocence at being human or is it part of some master plan? I still don’t quite know.

And can I just say thank goodness Fitz still picks Simmons? Even if it almost gets him killed. Because those two have been through so much. Can they just get married next episode and stop all of this back and forth crap?

Next: Tom Holland can, in fact, dance and here is proof from way back in 2010

Next week is Agents of SHIELD‘s season finale! Robbie Reyes is back, obviously. Vengeance will reign supreme, and it’s going to be ridiculous.
