Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – Netflix

Another CW gem. They just keep getting it right over there, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a damn delight. It’s part musical, part referendum on gender roles, and part friend story. It’s whip smart, hilarious, and will often times feel like it’s tell your story.

Crazy Ex follows Rebecca Bunch from New York City to West Covina, California after a chance encounter with an old boyfriend on the street in front of her office. After Rebecca chats briefly with Josh, she decides to move to California and join a firm there. It’s pretty clear that Rebecca is grappling with depression issues, and her sudden move is just a coping mechanism.

Once she arrives in the California town, she fixates on her former boyfriend, completely unknown to him. She tries to orchestrate a relationship with him, much to her (and our) embarrassment. Most of what Rebecca does is really a satire on female behavior and the stereotypes that plague in the media. But often, she strikes a chord with some of the more truthful moments. Her sexy “Getting Ready Song” will really resonate.

Although the tone is light and whimsical, there’s so much truth to its message and tone. You’ll recognize Rebecca’s pluck, strength, ingenuity, and spark. But you’ll also find her insecurity, anxiety, and crippling self-doubt completely relatable too.

Starring: Rachel Bloom, Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynn Champlin, and Gabrielle Ruiz
