A Series of Unfortunate Events – Netflix
This is not just a kids’ show, although your kids will probably love it just as much as you do. Fans of the macabre young adult novel of the same name, will recognize the Baudelaire children and their constant struggles to evade the evil Count Olaf.
Newcomers will appreciate Neil Patrick Harris as the above mentioned Count. Every episode finds him assuming a different character, yet he is adept at maintaining the Count’s essence through it all. He really is a treasure.
In the first season (and only, so far) of this Netflix original, we follow the three orphans as they bounce from one temporary home to another. They will inherit a very large fortune, and they are pursued by the Count as a strategy for stealing their money.
Even though it’s technically a kid’s show, there is so much subtext and muted humor that adults will get sucked in equally. For the younger kids, you might have to do a fair amount of explaining about the tragedies of life, but the show does a good job of balancing the morbid with the tongue in cheek.
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Joan Cusack, and Alfre Woodard
