Every once in a while, a show comes in under the radar and completely surprises you with it’s sheer awesomeness. Sneaky Pete is one of those shows that seems like it’s going to be about one thing, but winds up being about something completely different.
Giovanni Ribisi plays Marius, an ex-con who is released earlier than his prison cellmate, and assumes his identity. Marius goes back to Pete’s hometown, and becomes embroiled in the secrets and schemes of the family he’s joined. Marius is running from his shady past as well, dodging old gambling debts and mafia ties.
When Marius becomes the long-lost cousin, Pete, nobody has any reason to believe he’s not the returning Bernhardt boy they haven’t seen in years. He lives in the grandparents’ house, takes part in the family’s bail bonds business, and invests in the family politics like he’s belonged all along.
It’s written by Bryan Cranston, who also has a recurring role as the mob boss Vince, who tries to lure Marius back into his old ways. It begins as the story of a desperate conman, but it winds up being a story about this really cool family that you just want to protect and root for.
