This season of Feud: Bette and Joan has been nothing if not wildly entertaining. We’ve gotten an inside look into two of the most iconic Hollywood legends, both on a personal level and career-wise. We’ve been given full access into the way Hollywood was run in the so-called Golden Age, and we’ve had to hold those often sexist and always outdated ideals up to today’s standards to compare Bette and Joan’s experiences to what is, unfortunately, still the norm. And perhaps most interestingly of all, we’ve seen the women’s journeys, both individual and shared, from stardom to struggling to somewhere in between. Now, as the season’s finale coincides with what looks to be the finale of the two ladies’ once unflappable careers, we’re sure to get as close as ever to the strong, stumbling stars that are Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.
This Sunday, as Ryan Murphy’s brave, unprecedented, and necessary bio-series comes to a close after eight explosive episodes, Bette and Joan’s final years of feuding will likely be at the forefront. Though the episode’s trailer hints mostly at the ladies’ individual struggles as aging women in the world, we know better by now than to assume we’ll get by without a bit of lady-based drama. And, if we’re to accept the previous seven episodes as precedent, the women’s inevitable showdown will surely teach us more about ourselves, our society, our culture, and our view of women today than it will expose any dirt on the women of the past. Which- as Ryan Murphy has known and expertly capitalized on this whole season- is what we really need to be examining the hardest. But we’re certainly not going to scoff at a little drama, either.
