Daniel Holden – Rectify

Rectify is one of the most beautiful and important shows that nobody watched. As one of SundanceTV’s crowning jewels, this show was poetry personified. It ruminated on the human condition in ways that TV has never done before. Rectify features the story of Daniel Holden, recently released from prison after 19 years in solitary confinement, thanks to an overturned verdict.

Daniel returns home after being convicted of the rape and murder of his high school girlfriend and spending most of his life in a small, sterile jail cell. His conviction was overturned, but Rectify turns out to be much more than “did he or didn’t he.” The show is about Daniel trying to regain his humanity, figuring out what it means to be human, and how to fit into a world that’s been separate from you for so long. It’s totally gorgeous and will rip your heart out.

And Daniel Holden will do the same thing to you if you were his friends. Although he would definitely keep you at arm’s length, still waters run incredibly deep in this one. Daniel is constantly asking the big questions about purpose, fulfillment, and existence. It can get totally intense at times, but we should all be forced to examine our lives. Daniel will force you to do that, and then help you cope with what you uncover.
