John Legend has chart topping hits in “All Of Me” and “Love Me Now,” but no song has ever resonated quite as deeply as Phoebe Buffay’s “Smelly Cat.” Though Phoebe made it clear she’d never sell out and make her songs commercial jingles, it’s impossible to not dream of this potential. “Smelly Cat” has already gotten a bit of the star treatment, when Lisa Kudrow performed the number with Taylor Swift at a concert in 2015. John Legend was also a guest at one of T-Swift’s shows, which could have been the perfect test run.

Surprising no one, the entire venue sang along. Clearly, Phoebe Buffay has the skills to write a hit as well as John Legend. While “Smelly Cat” was Phoebe’s most successful song, she had no shortage of others. She could be inspired by anything, always creating new earworms for fans.

Phoebe did end up selling “Smelly Cat” and it turned into a weird pop song, lip synced by somebody else. But pairing the songs real vocals with John Legend could make it a powerful ballad. The key to this duo is soul. Both Phoebe and John Legend sing from their hearts.

The two would make a killer post-breakup playlist. We’d also accept a series of lullabies for John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s daughter – though it might be harder to find rhymes for “Luna” than it was for “Emma.”
