The DCEU Might Have Made A Good Decision: Joss Whedon is Making a Batgirl Movie
By Jenn Reid
Joss Whedon is currently in talks to write, direct and produce a Batgirl movie for WB.
Joss Whedon is going to write and direct Batgirl.
Someone pinch me. This doesn’t feel real.
There is going to be a Batgirl movie from the guy who gave us Buffy. How could this not be amazing?
Now, let me stop fangirling for a second and think about what this means for the DCEU.
First off, this indicates they have no intention of stopping. Some believed the DCEU was better off starting from scratch, but that’s obviously unlikely. In fact, it looks like WB is charging ahead, and they have a pile of movies they are looking to rush into production after Justice League comes out. Hopefully we’ll see more solid deals and announcements coming from WB over the next few weeks.
Secondly, it means they realized they needed someone with a plan. FINALLY.
Joss Whedon, love him or hate him, is an artist with a particular vision and style. He works best when he’s in control of the whole project (see: Buffy, Firefly, etc.) and stumbles when there’s too much studio interference or outside influence (the Marvel movie we like to forget ever happened, Avengers: Age of Ultron).
Does that mean WB will step out of his way and let him do his own thing?
I have to think yes. They must be throwing a bucket of money at Joss to get him back into the superhero world (his time at Marvel ended so poorly he even quit Twitter temporarily), and that means they know he is invaluable. Also notable is the fact that Whedon will write, direct and produce the film. That’s a better deal than Patty Jenkins or David Ayer ever got.
Third, I have to wonder what is Zach Snyder’s role, if any, in all of this? Is he still overseeing the entire DCEU? I can’t imagine his vision matching up with Whedon’s. Whedon is all about snappy dialogue, complicated characters and an overall fun vibe. Snyder’s version of DC so far has been more like different shades of slate grey, brooding characters and an overall dour vibe. Is Batgirl going to be the change in form people have been dying to get from DC?
A lot of that also depends on what version of Batgirl we’ll get to see. If he takes on New 52’s Batgirl of Burnside, it has to be upbeat in tone. If it’s classic Barbara Gordon, there’s the potential for a darker, more Snyder-esque take to come, especially if they want to make her Oracle later down the road. People have even floated the idea of Cassandra Cain, who would definitely be at home in the current DCEU.

There’s a lot we don’t know yet about the proposed project, but I’m optimistic. This could be a game-changer for the DCEU, but more importantly: THERE IS GOING TO BE A BATGIRL MOVIE!
