16. Hellboy

Some heroes honestly don’t have the patience for all of the trappings of superhero-dom. What does it all mean, anyway? Sure, there are times where this medallion or that skintight spandex suit can infer their own superpowers. After all, Hawkwoman wouldn’t be able to do even half of what she does without that belt made of practically magic Nth metal.

But other times, it’s all just show. And, really, when your own natural appearance is extra striking, there’s no need to enhance it. Look at Beast, for example. No need to accessorize when you’re a gigantic blue-furred humanoid.

Same thing for Hellboy. The demonic superhero hails from Dark Horse Comics and was created by writer and artist Mike Mignola. He also appeared in two Hellboy movies directed by auteur Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman as the title character.

Hellboy most often appears in a simple trench coat and pants. Usually, you can spot a Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) patch somewhere.

And that’s it, folks. Sometimes, he wears a shirt (quite possibly because Ron Perlman didn’t feel like getting painted red all over every day of the shoot). More often, he’s carrying a gun and a stogie. Otherwise, it’s simple. No need to overdo it when you’re a bright red demon prince with a stone hand.
