The Importance of the Arts Featuring a Julie Andrews Letter

When it comes to the arts, Donald Trump wants to cut funding and we are here to tell you why the arts are important, and also, Julie Andrews.

Donald Trump’s new budget plans to cut funding for the arts and no one, including Julie Andrews, is too happy about it. For those of you who aren’t ‘artsy’ people, let someone who is explain why they’re important.

If you’re not sporty or good at science, if you’re not an engineer or someone who finds joy in maths, you might find your place among the arts. It is important for us to find what truly makes us happy. And for many of us, that place is within theater or painting. It is in the arts that Donald Trump does not deem worth the time of children.

Julie Andrews Pens a Letter

In an Op-ed for CNN, Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton defended the arts and why they are important. You can read a segment of the piece here:

"The arts are fundamental to our common humanity. Every time we attend the theater, a museum or a concert, we are literally feeding our souls, and investing in and preserving our collective future. To paraphrase the great Katherine Anne Porter, when all about us is lying in the ashes, it is the arts that remind us who we are, where we came from and what matters most.We feel it has never been more critical to advocate for and support the arts — not just in our schools, but in our communities and our lives. We therefore respectfully request that every member of our society — individuals, educators, administrators, business leaders — do everything possible to preserve and advance this most precious and essential resource, and demand that our elected representatives do the same."
