Elyse, Mallory, and Jennifer

Back when it was endearing to have warring political agendas among loved ones, Elyse Keaton projected her hippy, counterculture values all over her children. Her son, Alex, always posed opposition, and rebelled in the least effective way possible: succeeding.

Her daughters, on the other hand, were far less interested in who she voted for, and more interested in getting her level-headed advice and approval. Mallory, the actual rebel and free-spirit, didn’t inherit her parents’ traditional intellect, so she relied on her mother to offer a reasonable perspective. She obviously didn’t always listen brought home a really inappropriate boy whom she wound up marrying. In true, Elyse fashion, however, she paved the way for the family to accept and love him. Even Alex.

Jennifer was less interested in protesting and  resisting and just wanted her mom and dad to show up to her games. Of course they did, and this gave Jennifer permission to be herself, even if was outside of her parents’ expectations.

Elyse provided a stable, secure place for her daughters to pursue their own interests, even if they weren’t in their own best interest, but she never let the forget where she stood on things. A mother who can maintain her own values while still accepting the opposing values of her daughters is a mother who will always have the respect of her children.
