Now here’s a family with some complicated mother/daughter stuff, the least of which is Maura’s transgender status. Sarah and Alex are a teeming petri dish of neuroses, anxiety disorders, and weird hangups. They are a mess, and it takes Maura’s grounding and level-head to keep them from spinning out into space. I love that no matter how high strung or whacked out her daughters get, she is always there to help them come back down to earth.

Both daughters struggle to find their won identity. Sarah couldn’t figure out how to live without being someone’s wife, so she rushed into another engagement and wedding, only to melt down at the ceremony. Alex is working out her own issues with her much-older professor, and she’s trying to figure out who she is.

Thanks to Maura, these two women has a strong example of the hard work it takes to be who you really should be. She’s set the bar for courage, persistence, and bravery extremely high and her daughters only need to rise to it. Although that might seem intimidating, Maura’s gentle patience keeps her from banging their heads together. Because, trust me, Sarah and Alex need it a lot of the time.
