Face Off Season 11 Episode 8 Recap: Odd Couples

Face Off All Stars is back for episode 8. The artists teams will work with pairs of models for this week’s challenge, Odd Couples.

It’s week 8 of Face Off All Stars, and one team is going home. Will Evan and Ben be in last looks once again? Let’s see how the pair faces up to this week’s Odd Couples challenge.

Tonight on Face Off, the artists meet in a lovely park and enjoy the springtime weather. (The East Coast is entirely jealous, as we’re right digging ourselves out from an ice blizzard.) McKenzie tells the teams they’re each working with a pair of model to design an odd couple for an epic adventure film. Think Shrek and Donkey, or Legolas and Gimli from Lord of the Rings.

This Week’s Challenge

The models parade out into the park wearing all manner of oddly shaped body suits. The goal of this week’s twist is to represent diverse body types, because each model also has a fantasy “race” for their character.

The teams each choose a male and a female model:

Emily & Tyler: Goblin & Faun
Their characters meet on a quest. The goblin is a sneaky con artist who manipulates the gentle faun to help him on his journey.

Ben & Evan: Wood Elf & Minotaur
They go for funny. The elf will be a hottie tottie old lady with a real beehive hairdo, and the young Minotaur is her beefy companion. They’re feeling excited and refreshed for this challenge.

Keaghlan & Melissa: Fairy & Troll
They’re super happy with this one. Keaghlan likes pretty stuff, so she’s making a Golden Girls-type fairy who is married to Melissa’s rock hard young troll.

Logan & Adam: Orc & Naiad
They’re still feeling dejected from the critiques of their bottom look from last week. But they manage to decide that their orc is dumb and brutish, and the naiad is book smart and fun, but not so physically capable.

Cig & George: Dwarf & Ogre
Cig is bouncing up and down again from excitement about this challnege. Their dwarf is a lonely old spitfire who wants to see the world. She saves the “Lenny from Mice and Men” ogre, and he follows her on her travels.

In the Lab

As soon as they’re back in the lab, everyone starts working as fast as they can, since each pair of teams is doing two whole makeups. Emily and Tyler and going extra hard, because they need to finish their cowls and apply hair tomorrow. Logan and Adam are still solidifying their concept, but their trying to push ahead anyway. Ben and Evan fall behind right away when Ben decides he doesn’t like the beehive he’s sculpting. They scrap it so he can work on an old age face, but they’ve wasted a lot of time. They’re back to being frustrated.

Michael enters the lab for mentoring time. He tells most of them to make them look more like their fantasy characters and gives them tips about how to do that. Overall, Michael seems pretty happy with what he sees. The artists get back to work. At the end of the day, Adam and Logan realize they aren’t getting their molds done and Adam is incredibly frustrated as they all leave the lab.

On day 2, Keaghlan decides to spend more time perfecting her sculpt. Ben and Evan realize they’ve over-designed for the allotted time, so they start editing their idea. But Adam’s in trouble. His cowl came out in two pieces and he’s so annoyed he kicks over a trash can. But his face sculpt is good. He decides to fabricate the naiad’s crest instead of running a cowl, but he’s still not happy. Everyone else is just working their butts off trying to finish those two makeups.

Day 3 and Last Looks

The models enter for day 3, and for all Adam’s complaining yesterday, his naiad is looking cool. They’re all nervous about how much work the need to do before they can start painting. But they get there anyway.

Keaghlan starts on her base coat and immediately gets the sads because she doesn’t like it. Evan starts panting and he’s actually surprised and exited about how good it looks. The day ends without more major drama, but Keaghlan is nervous their characters are too goofy compared to the others’.

In Last Looks, George notices some of his appliances are too big, so he trims them back. But he isn’t worried. Emily and Tyler’s goblin’s mouth is lifting off, so they try a workaround. When they call time, Keaghlan and Melissa are feeling scared about what the judges will think of their characters.

On the reveal stage, everyone is hoping they managed to pull off their characters, but they are all worried. So what did the judges think?

[Check back later for pictures of the final looks.]

Mushy Middle

Logan and Adam: The judges don’t like the glasses on Adam’s naiad. Glenn doesn’t think there’s enough going on around the face, although he really likes her head fin. He actually says the makeup is garishly applied and they’re working against themselves. Logan’s orc, on the other hand, has the judges all excited. It really embraces the challenge. Ve tells them the naiad is too goofy, but that the orc is pretty fantastic. Neville thinks many shapes on the naiad are superfluous. On the other hand, he says the orc good. Glenn tells them the naiad feel underdeveloped, but the orc is one of their most successful makeups. If Adam’s face makeup were better, the naiad would have been successful. But it’s better than their stonemason puppet from the last episode, so they seem to be getting better as the weeks pass.

Emily and Tyler: They all love the hair on both Emily and Tyler’s characters. Glenn thinks it’s really cool. They love how the team played with proportions and Neville says their work is beautiful. Glenn calls their faun “absolutely stunning,” and he loves the goblin’s detail and coloring. The faun is actually Ve’s favorite character ever, and that the goblin is so big and fabulous she just wants to take him home. Neville loves the way the costumes, palette and weathering make the characters work as a pair. Ve loves everything about them. The faun’s compassionate, emotive nature makes it so stunning. They harmonized the buddy characters, and worked together as a team.

Ben and Evan: The judges really like the elf’s character and shapes in general, but it falls apart due to the textures and wrinkling. But they just love the Minotaur, especially the transitions of sculpt and color. Glenn tells the team it’s a top-notch, class-A Minotaur makeup, and the comedy element is great. The judges tell Ben and Evan they did a great job tonight. The Minotaur is fantastic, but the elf didn’t really meet the challenge.

Top Look

Glenn announces the winning team right off. It’s Cig and George! They nailed everything about this challenge, including the storytelling behind their characters. It’s their third win this season. The judges are impressed by George’s dwarf, and the amount and quality of silicone work he pulled off. They’re just blown away by Cig’s ogre. It looks like he created a character that the body suit goes with and not vice versa, and that’s really the core of the challenge.

Ve says the dwarf’s old age makeup is the best use of silicone they’ve seen on the show. They also think the silicone on the ogre’s stomach is very cool. Neville says the dwarf is the most sublime embodiment of a fantasy dwarf. Wow. It feels organic and makes him laugh. Glenn praises their use of proportions, which really create the comedy. The makeup is perfectly executed. Neville is impressed that they both showed their sense of humor and used restraint, because that’s the secret to getting it right.

Bottom Look

There’s only one team left, so you guessed it. Melissa and Keaghlan are going home. The judges could not ignore that certain aspects of the characters were still very rough. Ve loved the detail on the troll’s nose, but they all wished the sculpture had more detail. Glenn didn’t think Keaghlan’s character read fairy. Neville told them the fairy felt chalky and one dimensional, and the troll’s fat body and defined jawline was weirdly inconsistent. Glenn says Keaghlan didn’t really manage show her character and that, “weird skin tone and colored eyebrows do not a fairy make.” It failed miserably. Ve said it might have looked better if the fairy were pudgy instead of old, and she shouldn’t have painted the face a flat shade of lavender.

I think Melissa and Keaghlan were kind of expecting elimination this week, which really didn’t help. Melissa and Keaghlan never really gelled as a team, and the judges noticed. It showed in all their makeups. They both seem like perfectly good artists, but they need practice. It’s not like they didn’t get along as friends, but they fed off each others lack of confidence, and that was their downfall.
