MTV Movie Awards Adds TV To Their Nominations Slate

The MTV Movie Awards decide to give a more Golden Globes style award show a try as they add in television nominations for the first time.

The MTV Movie Awards have always been to the Oscars and the MTV Video Music Awards are the the Grammys. The in-your-face trashy cousin who makes no bones about the sort of thing they think worth awards, be it “best Make Out Scene” or “Best Gross Out Scene.”  But now they’re taking themselves up a notch, and aiming to be the Globe’s trashier cousin as well, as, for the first time, they announce the inclusion of television shows.

One might argue, this was long overdue, as the channel has long since stopped being one where music is played 24-7-365, and known for their TV shows, from the early 90s and The Real World to last year’s attempt at aping Game of Thrones with The Shannara Chronicles.

According to the press release, it’s “peak tv” that’s to blame.

"“We’re living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you’re watching it in a theater or on TV,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV.  “The new ‘MTV Movie & TV Awards’ will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest, funniest and most shared films and TV shows resonating across youth culture.”"

The show, which airs on May 7th, promises a “Movie and Television Fest” leading up to the award show itself, a “massive daylong party”. Which sounds about right for the MTV type awards show. One wonders if they will deliberately nominate shows like Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and The Walking Dead in hopes of getting some of the younger stars of each to show up and loudly and proudly party down. (We have high hopes of seeing Maisie Williams leading that charge.)
