Last Sunday’s premiere episode of Ryan Murphy’s newest anthology series sure gave us a lot to think about. They packed the premiere with killer (no pun intended) lady moments, both from the actresses playing our actresses AND from the actresses being played. We got a ton of insider Hollywood insight, too. Though, after a short, unsettling glimpse into the golden age as it grew duller, most of us likely wished we’d never seen anything. And we got, for better or for worse, the quick and dirty introduction to one of the entertainment industry’s longest and dirtiest feuds in history.

While its trailer promises lady-vs-lady action, it’s likely the subtler cues, the quieter moments, and the pain rather than the hate, as Olivia de Havilland pointed out, will continue to captivate us as the season progresses. The show’s title may indicate otherwise. But even one episode (and a trailer) in, it’s clear that creator Ryan Murphy feels more interested in the origins and the implications of this feud than its gritty details.

The women at the heart of the lore, though devilishly fun to watch and inconceivably legendary in real life AND NOW even in their recreations, are here are tragic figures, not heroines. Their suffering under the studio system comes from institutionalized sexism; their refusal to work together and insistence on sabotaging the other also stems from internalized sexism. And it’s clear that Ryan Murphy has curated this experience to show us that, somehow even in (or maybe ESPECIALLY in) 2017, sexism is inescapable from all sides.
