6. New Mutants Part 2

I swear, we’re going to get to a happy story soon. Soon-ish. Well, if you’re a fan of Wolverine in general, then you should already know that his stories are rarely laugh-a-minute kind of affairs. They’re often fun in a ridiculous, over-the-top sort of way, though. We’ll get to it, seriously.

But New Mutants Part 2 (Ultimate X-Men #41) isn’t one of those stories, so buckle in.

The issue actually doesn’t start with Wolverine. It starts with a teenage boy waking up in his normal, messy, be-postered teenager room. When he walks downstairs, however, things start getting weird. None of his family members are home. He walks outside and sees an empty dog collar lying on the ground.

As he makes his way through town, he realizes that something is really, truly wrong. He makes it to school and finally sees his fellow classmates. He experiences a brief moment of relief before they all disintegrate before him.

Later, we catch up with him in a cave as a mysterious man approaches. He shouts for the man to stop, but it turns out to be familiar old Wolverine. He approaches the young man and basically tells him that he has one of the worst mutations of all time. The boy essentially vaporizes all organic matter around him within a particular radius, including his family, his girlfriend, any bystanders, and at least one innocent dog.

“Just do it,” the boy says. There’s a pause of several quiet, characterless panels. Then, we see that Wolverine leaves the cave, alone. It’s devastating in its simplicity, and it will stay with you for a long, long time.
