19. Enemy of the State
You know, for as tragic and crabby as Wolverine can get, he’s pretty much always been a good guy. He fights on the side of the X-Men, after all, and though he’s often clashed with the more classically heroic (and occasionally uptight) Cyclops, they typically end up fighting together.
Well, Enemy of the State, this status quo gets turned on its head pretty vehemently. As written by Mark Millar and drawn by John Romita, Jr., this 2004-2005 series showed Logan in a very different light.
It’s not Wolverine’s fault that he’s bad, though. Really, it’s because of HYDRA and the Hand, a mysterious group of ninjas that serves a demon lord. The two supervillainous groups team up to brainwash Wolverine. Though Wolverine’s mind is, at this point, scrubbed three times over by various bad guys, this time really sticks. He becomes a vicious killing machine at the back and call of evil.
The Fantastic Four tries to defeat him and fails. Daredevil goes up against Wolverine. It doesn’t work. Even the X-Men can’t seem to get through to their former friend while he’s busy causing mayhem. Eventually, Wolverine’s old friend Elektra (who, by the way, was trained by the Hand) is able to save the day.
